Marine Surveying

A Pre-Purchase Marine Survey is a must for the purchase of a previously owned/brokered vessel and is recommended for the purchase of new big dollar yachts. This one service can save you thousands of dollars and teach you about your new vessel,  while going over the boat bow to stern looking for any structural irregularities or system issues and irregularities.  Moisture meters, confined space inspection cameras, electrical testing equipment, and THERMAL IMAGING are used to identify and document mechanical, electrical, structural, and systems irregularities.
Diacom Marine computer software is also used to determine actual engine hours, engine error and fault codes, and performance irregularities that occur and are stored in the engines ECM.

Insurance Surveys are also a large part of our business at a time when everyone is looking for the best insurance value for the dollar or if a current insurance survey is needed to maintain existing insurance.

Damage Surveys are performed for boat manufacturers, boat yards, insurance companies, and private owners to determine the cause of vessel or system failure or to determine the extent of existing vessel damage.  With previous experience as a marine repair technician, my knowledge of marine and electrical systems as well as vessel structures is a plus when diagnosing and determining the actual cause of loss.

Along with the above noted marine surveys, Consultations are also performed for reconstruction projects, new installations, and oversight on any structural or various vessel repair work.  Instruction is also offered for do-it-your self-ers who are performing regular maintenance projects and need guidance while following ABYC standards for repairs, installations, or materials that should be used.

Key Benefits
  • Quality system inspection by a SAMS AMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors).  Using ABYC standards and appropriate USCG CFR's for installation, materials, and manufacturing quality.
  • Quality hull inspection. (moisture testing with various meters and thermal imaging, hull sounding, delamination/voids/blister, underwater hardware, etc.)
  • Drive system check, alignment,  and maintenance.
  • Cooling pressure testing for blockage or flow.
  •  THERMAL IMAGING of structural, electrical, and mechanical systems by a Level 1 Thermographer.   Above, the thermal image taken of the exhaust elbow shows extreme temperatures and was identified in the survey to be faulty gasket or clogged cooling ports. After removal of the elbow, it was determined that the gasket between the riser and the elbow was installed incorrectly. Faulty wiring, structural irregularities, failing batteries, and marine system operational irregularities have also be identified using thermal imaging.
  • Engine analysis is available with Diacom Marine computer diagnostic software for applicable engines.
  • Compression Checks for gasoline engines.
  • Previously working as a full service marine technician enables me to do complete mechanical surveys and systems diagnosis.
  • Stray current corrosion analysis is also offered as an additional service when requested or as a stand-alone service.
  • Oil and/or Fluid analysis is offered when requested and recommended for diesel engines and larger vessels.
  • Boat maneuverability and system check (underway).
  • Quality safety inspection by a seasoned captain and full-time surveyor with 20+ years surveying experience.
  • Tips and recommendations for service or repair from a qualified technician.
  • Knowledge gained through ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council), SAMS  (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors), Boatpokers Surveyors Forum, Boat US Technical Exchange, NFPA  National Fire Protection Association, prior experience as a marine technician, and  USCG Certification is passed onto you, the consumer, for a safer boating experience.
